Artemia Naupali

Hey chaps!!Could somebody please tell me how long does it take to hatch Artemia Eggs.I followed the insrtuctions on the packet which said to add contents of packet into 500ml of tap water and to leave 24 hours under room temperature with an airstone running. It is almost going for 48 hours and the eggs have not yet hatched.Am I doing something wrong or what?
I did however use R0 Water instead of tap water. Please help in this regard.
Shot!!!

It will usually take between 12 to 24 hours but if you decapsulate them first they will hatch faster and you will get a better hatch rate.

Hi Merlin, Artemia Naupali has never been mentioned on SARK. What is it?

Hello Rogan. What do you mean by saying If I decapsulate them first they will hatch faster and you will get a better hatch rate.
Please elaborate.Thanks Buddy!
M.

Hi Boegie.Artemia Naupali is Brine Shrimp Eggs that have not been hatched yet.Once hatched they are good for growth in young fish and invertabrae and also stimulates the growth of corals.I know this much.If you would like to find out more info on this you can google it.
Cheers!!!

Do I have too much aeration running in the bottle? I am using a 2Lt bottle to do this.

you need to provide a strong light over the hatching container. A 60W bulb about 30cm above will suffice.

it could also be that the cysts are just "dead". have you been keeping them in the fridge/freezer or just on the shelf? keeping them cool is better but make sure the container is sealed so no moisture gets in. if they are dead then you can still decapsulate them and use them like that for your corals.

They are really good for breeding fresh water fish. I actually just got a hatcher tray from Brine Shrimp Direct. Going to test it. Apparently, they hatch without the use of any power. No pump, no light, no nothing! If this works, I'm going to order another one...

Good food for marine fish and corals too, I believe...

Decapsulating is taking the outter shell of the eggs off.

-put the eggs in a cup with salt water and leave it for an hour to re-hydrate.

-After an hour put bleach into the cup(the cup should now contain eggs,2/3 salt water and 1/3 bleach)

-Leave it until the eggs go a more orange colour(usually takes 10-15 minutes)

-Once the eggs have changed colour pour the eggs into a strainer or something similar and make sure you rinse all the bleach off the eggs.

-Once the bleach is rinsed off put the eggs in a bottle with salt water and an airline for flow, prefferably not to strong and not to weak, just strong enough to keep the eggs suspended and not sink to the bottom of the bottle.

Its best to keep the bottle in the sump to keep the water temperature warm and stable.

The hatching this way is usually between 8-12 hours.

They do not need a light or anything but an airline keeps the eggs suspended

This tray uses 500ml of water, with 3 teaspoons of salt and artemia eggs. That's it. Nothing else is needed. I'll set this thing up today and I'll post the results tomorrow or the day after, depending on how long they take to hatch. Like I said, if this thing works, I'll order another one and maybe look at bringing them in to supply the local market one day...

IF its the sera yellow pack then you gona struggle with finding a decent pack that will hatch out more than 40% in anycase

One ttip, place the bottle witht he eggs in your sump, the higer temp helps them breed out

Question - if I get some of these, hatch them and turf them in the sump/dsb, will they start living there and breeding and all of that good stuff?

I did quite a bit of reading about hatching these a while ago. They need, as has already been said, flow to keep the eggs suspended - small air pump works best but you do need to play with the flow rate else the eggs either end up sinking or get stock to the container above the water surface if the air flow is too strong.

The 60W light bulb is not for light, but supplies just enough heat to speed up the hatching - it can take 3-4 days in cold water and 12-48 hours in warmer temp.

IMO not worth even attempting to breed them. Rather just buy the eggs and make up a hatchery. If you want to fatten them up for a few days, then you can grind up yeast granules and feed them on that.

Not much eats the empty egg capsules and they tend to clog up and become nitrate factories, so try get as little as possible of these into your system. Rather use a torchlight to gather the young Naupali into a group and then siphon them out with airline tube - I use a syringe which works well. Then filter the water - I use coffee filter paper for this which works for me. You could also soak them in a vitamin bath before feeding them to your fish and corals as they actually don't have much nutrient value, and their value decreases within hours of hatching.
