marine snow

Hi eric

at imacsa you spoke about marine snow being good for our tanks( not the product, the floaties)

the last 3 weeks or so i have had everything except sps spawn in my tank, i never knew i had so many snails until my wife and i watched 7 come u infront of the vortech and drop billions of eggs into my water column, my cockels have done the same as well as my hermits, cleaner shrimps, harlequins and some funny tube thing that grow in the LR, my question is i have so much of these eggs etc floating around my tank its ridiculous, they water is clear but riddled with floaties, i have gone to wet skimming , flossing , increasing water change regime, and slowed down on feeding fish and coral but i still am not making a dent with all these floaties, am i heading for disaster with all these extra floaties "polluting" my tank or is it doing good as in the form of marine snow??

Hi phat!

The above response is more or less the answer. To me, it sounds good. But, what does the water quality say? If it looks fine, super. Now, you also want water clarity (no dissolved organics) so use carbon or ozone to deal with that. Crystal clear water with low measurable nutrients and lots of floaties is what you want! Great news on the spawnings!

IIRC they analysed marine snow and found it was over 99 water. the link may take some digging but if youre interested im sure i could find it tonight. i would go with home cultures.

I think he is referring to Marine Snow the product, not marine snow the natural stuff in the ocean.

If the product, that was years ago. The product has been reformulated, but has not been analyzed to my knowledge. There are other similar products from other vendors now, as well. I would look at the ingredients, but any liquid product is going to be a lot of water - in fact, even live products are going to be about 70% water (live organisms are more or less mostly water).

I would still suggest live food items, including pseudoplankton (like eggs) that phat has. By the way, phat, any recruitment from all this spawning activity?
